"Old Time Tiger Hero's"

"Old Time Tiger Hero's".

Say Hello to Richmond's very first VFL captain: Mr. Charlie Pannam!

Born: October 02, 1874, Greece
Died: January 01, 1952 (age 77), Abbotsford

Charlie Pannam was our very first captain when we entered the VFL competition in 1908. You may not know but Charlie is actually the grandfather of Collingwood icons Lou and Ron Richards and he played 14 games and kicked 22 goals in his sole league season with us and he even later went on to coach the Club. He played for Richmond in the VFA in 1907 as well as in the VFL in 1908 and he was our senior coach in 1907 and 1912.

Say Hello to Richmond's very first  VFL coach! Dick Condon (1876-1946)

Did you know that the recruiting wars between Richmond and Collingwood of the 1980’s can actually be traced back to our foundation year in 1908! Can you believe it? Not only did we get our first captain from the “dirty rotten magpies” (Charlie Pannam) but we actually had one of their own coach us in our first two years in the VFL as well! His name was Dick Condon and he was as troubled as he was brilliant. So yes our first captain and coach came from The neighboring suburb of Collingwood! AARRGGHHHH!! The pain!

"Old Time Tiger Heroes". Doug Strang 1931-1935

During the off season we will bring you a series we call "Old Time Tiger Heroes". We will be going way way back so we hope you enjoy! To start with we are beginning with the hero that has kicked more goals in a single game than any other Tiger in our history back in 1931! He is Doug Strang the brother of Gordon Strang and father of dual Richmond premiership player Geoff Strang.was an Australian rules footballer who played as a full forward in the VFL between 1931 and 1935 for the Richmond Football Club.

"Old Time Tiger Heroes".  Mr Jack "Skinny" Titus

(3 March 1908 – April 19 1978)

Today it is a huge pleasure to bring to you an absolute giant of the Richmond footy club who upon his retirement held eight (yes 8) Richmond records and currently sits sixth on the all time goal kicking list with 970! He is of course Mr Jack "Skinny" Titus who played for the Mighty Tigers in the golden era of the 1930s and went onto help the club in various voluntary positions after that. his service to the club lasted well over 50 years!

"Old Time Tiger Heroes".  Paddy Guinane

(31 January 1939-   )

Happy 76th Birthday to our oldest living premiership player Paddy Guinane. And did he ever have an individual kicking style! The son of former Richmond defender Danny Guinane, Paddy Guinane followed in his father's footsteps with a 146 game VFL career with the Tigers between 1959 and 1968. Unlike his father, however, he played most of his football on the forward lines (although he also played, at some time or another, in virtually every position on the field), and his 216 career goals included tallies of 50 in 1966 and 41 two years later which were good enough to top Richmond's list.

"Old Time Tiger Heroes".  Neil Balme

(15 January 1952 -   )

Neil Balme had played just four senior games for Subiaco when he turned up on Richmond's doorstep as a seventeen year old in January 1969. The recruitment of such young players from interstate was comparatively rare at the time, but the Tigers, perhaps recognising that Balme was mature, both physically and mentally, beyond his years, took a punt and signed him up, a decision for which they would have ample cause to congratulate themselves over the course of the next decade.

"Old Time Tiger Heroes".  Alan "Bull" Richardson

(19 November 1940 -   )

Did you know that "Richo" was a father son selection? Yep!
His dad Alan 'Bull' Richardson played in the VFL between 1959 and 1969 for the Richmond Football Club and then from mid-1969 until 1970 for the South Melbourne Football Club. He played 103 games and 30 goals for us. He was also a Richmond Premiership Player in 1967, a Reserves Best & Fairest 1963, 1964 and Reserves Captain 1963, 1964

"Old Time Tiger Heroes".  Jack O'Rourke

(13 July 1928 - 11 April 2008)

Jack O'Rourke The man who made Roachy and Jack look like a lightweight!! Jack O'Rourke was a spectacular and highly effective full forward who should perhaps have achieved a good deal more in the game than he did. As it was, he played 44 VFL games for Richmond between 1949 and 1953, kicking 134 goals. Had he not been such a frequent victim of injury, both totals would have been considerably higher.

"Old Time Tiger Heroes".  Basil McCormack

(3 August 1904 - 19 February 1973)

He is a member of the Tigers Team Of The Century at half back (selected along side Gordon Strang and Mervyn Keane), a two time winner of the Best and Fairest award, a member of the Tigers victorious 1932 and 1934 premiership sides.
Playing on the half back flank Basil would have very few peers before or since, and it is said he was major reason with his prominent displays and being amongst the Tigers best players that the Tigers played in seven Grand Finals between 1927 and 1934.

"Old Time Tiger Heroes".   Gordon Strang

(10 February 1908 – 8 October 1951)

Described as one of the classiest players, of his era Gordon Strang was noted for his safe hands and was a great marker of the ball  (took 12 marks on debut),
in 1931 he put in an outstanding debut season playing all games including the grand final, unfortunately the Tigers after were not victorious in the Grand Final losing to Geelong.
