THE CAPTAIN AND THE MAJOR AND 3KZ IS FOOTBALL!!!!

THE CAPTAIN AND THE MAJOR AND 3KZ IS FOOTBALL!!!! Like others I grew up on 3KZ Football, Ian Major and Jack Dyer or as we all knew them better as “The Captain and the Major” and they ruled the footy airwaves for years on 3KZ. "3KZ is football" was part of the Melbourne language thanks to them. The combination of the Captain and the Major was unequalled before or after on radio or TV, and with Laurie Sandilands as the third banana was must-listen commentary. Ian was an excellent caller and a great foil for Captain Blood and of course 3KZ IS football! I can’t quite remember the whole jingle but here goes.

The siren sounds the big men jump, Push in the back, ahh come on ump Ian Major and Captain Blood For footy we're way ahead That's Melbourne's 3KZ And the adverts ... Jack's one for Mighty Muir's - The Price Fighters, Visionhire, Radio Rentals ... aaah, memories from greater times! I fondly recall the 'around the grounds call" as well...used to be along the lines of "Royce simmonds at Essendon", Gerald Burke at Collingwood etc etc...just remember how he referred to the grounds under the suburb for which they resided.

3KZ or KZFM isssssssssssssss football! Jack Dyer’s media career almost over shadowed his playing and coaching days. Audiences loved him because of his honesty, his humour and because he so often mangled his words. But amid the confusion came sublime statements that became known as ‘Dyerisms’, spoken throughout a decades-long radio career that was dominated by his calling with the brilliant broadcaster Ian Major (The Captain and the Major) on radio 3KZ (“3KZ is football!”).

Here are some classic ‘Dyerisms’ They were the lines that made Jack even more famous: "My wife and I had a wonderful time on the French Riverina." "He's loping around the wing like a giant tarantulop." "Bartlett's, he's older than he's ever been before." “The ball's in no-man's land and the loose man's come from everywhere." “Things aren't the same now there are five teams in the four." "An Essendon supporter is a Collingwood supporter who can read and write." "Bamblett made a great debut today and an even better one last week." "He's a good ordinary footballer." (about Carlton's Peter Bosustow) "A bit of bad luck for Bob." (on the death of former Carlton champ Bob Chitty) "I won't say anything in case I say something." “Diamond Creek was a long way away once."

Pictured here is Incredibly rare 12" record with highlights and interviews from the 1982 VFL Grand Final between Carlton and Richmond. Never came with a sleeve and is in near new condition - looks like it has hardly ever been played. Features commentary from Jack Dyer, Ian Major and more. 3KZ is football. The interviews include a younger Rex Hunt, Robbie 'Bones' McGhie, Graeme Richmond and Tommy Hafey to name a few.
